“As is usual for me, I started by singing nonsense sounds. I worked out most of the real words while hiking in the beautiful state park adjacent to my neighborhood, jotting down phrases in a little notebook. The lyrics are simpler and more direct than in many of my songs. That’s just what the music seemed to want. If I’ve learned anything about songwriting over the years, it’s that you need to follow the song wherever it wants to go. You are not in charge.”
